Joseph Frey (1808 - 1872) war Fassmaler und Nebenerwerbslandwirt in Schmiechen. Sein Neffe Karl (1836 - 1900) studierte an der Akademie in München und spezialisierte sich auf Porträtmalerei. Er schuf aber auch drei Kreuzwegserien. Hierbei orientierte er sich an der Nazarenermalerei. Er wohnte in Egling an der Paar. Neben der Malerei führte er die königliche Postagentur in Egling und betrieb eine kleine Landwirtschaft.
