El conjunto de textos epistolares que componen este libro está constituido por las 32 cartas que Viera y Clavijo envió a Fernando de la Guerra, marqués de San Andrés, desde el 26 de noviembre de 1770 hasta el 10 de febrero de 1792. En este epistolario encontramos al Viera más mordaz y crítico, con una mentalidad totalmente distinta a la que se aprecia en sus escritos “oficiales”. La epistolografía de Viera y especialmente la que es objeto de esta edición constituye una vinculación singular entre pensamiento y dicción, que se aleja del habitual sometimiento de ésta al momento histórico en que él vive.
