Las coincidencias espaciales y temporales en las vidas de Cuvier y Hegel son sorprendentes, aunque han sido ignoradas hasta la fecha. Nacieron como súbditos del mismo estado (Württemberg) con una diferencia de un año. Murieron durante la primera epidemia de cólera que sacudió Europa, con una diferencia de meses. Compartieron amigos y una fobia, la Naturphilosophie, que de hecho podría considerarse como tercer protagonista de esta obra. Ese movimiento idealista, fundamentalmente alemán, con vertientes científicas y filosóficas, fue sometido a duras críticas por ambos personajes.
