Monseñor Lamont fue el obispo carmelita de Umtali (hoy Mutare) en Rodesia del Sur (hoy Zimbabue). Tras hacer sus estudios en Roma y trabajar varios años en su Irlanda natal, fue como misionero a Rodesia. Alli mantuvo un prolongado enfrentamiento con las autoridades coloniales por las leyes que discriminaban a la mayoria neg;ra. En 1959 escribe su carta pastoral Purchased People (Pueblo adquirido) que se convirtio en un hito de la historia de la Iglesia Catolica en Africa. En 1976 fue detenido y, tras un juicio sumarisimo, fue expulsado del pais en 1977. Lamont recibio un fuerte apoyo internacional y llego a estar propuesto para el premio Nobel de la Paz. Destaco tambien por su contribucion en la elaboracion del decreto Ad gentes del Concilio Vaticano II.
