Pocas sillas en la historia del diseño habrán acarreado tanta polémica y tanta disputa por su autoría como la sillas voladas de tubo de acero en sus diferentes versiones. En el año 1927 las figuras más reconocidas de la arquitectura europea se dieron cita en la colonia experimental de la Weissenhoff, donde en movimiento moderno tuvo la ocasión de mostrar al mundo su propuesta para la vivienda del futuro y los objetos que la habrían de habitar. Entre todas las piezas de mobiliario expuestas hubo una que destacó sobre todas las demás por su novedad y audacia: la silla volada sin apoyos posteriores cuya autoría fue reclamada al unísono por tres figuras clave de la arquitectura que estaba por llegar: Mies van der Rohe, Mart Stam y Marcel Breuer.
