En 1994 obtuvo el premio Clyde S. Kilby. Fue convocado por la BBC y por Peter Jackson para comentar los DVD sobre El Señor de los Anillos. Es autor de numerosos libros, entre ellos, The C. S. Lewis Handbook, Tolkien and Middle Herat Handbook, The C. S. Lewis Encyclopedia, The Inklings Handbook y Tolkien and The Lord of the Rings.
