Joseph Roth (1894-1939) nació en Ucrania y fue oficial del Imperio austrohúngaro en la Primera Guerra Mundial. En 1933, después del triunfo nazi, tuvo que exiliarse de Alemania, donde residía;murió en París. Entre su obra narrativa figuran "La marcha de Radetzky", "La cripta de los capuchinos" y, publicados por Anagrama, "La noche mil dos", "La leyenda del Santo Bebedor", "A diestra y siniestra" y "Confesión de un asesino". Está considerado, con Broch y Musil, como uno de los mayores escritores centroeuropeos de este siglo.
