La dimensión social y política del amor entre hombres en la obra de Melville se concretiza especialmente en su última novela, Billy Budd, Sailor, incompleta a la muerte del escritor en 1891 y publicada por primera vez en 1924. En ella, Melville analiza cómo las instituciones interpretan el amor entre hombres como una amenaza a las jerarquías establecidas y, para perpetuarse, lo demonizan mediante la homofobia.
