Poco antes del fin de la Primera Guerra Mundial, Freud y Ferenczi disfrutan del éxito del Congreso de Budapest de 1918, que fue organizado por Ferenczi y Anton von Freund. En el trancurso de este Congreso, Ferenczi es elegido presidente de la Asociación Psicoanalítica Internacional y presenta diversos estudios sobre el tratamiento psicoanalítico de las neurosis de guerra. Es entonces cuando Freud y Ferenczi presentan al público por primera vez el concepto de la "actividad" psicoanalítica.
