En el Fedro platónico, Sócrates define la filosofía (dialéctica) como arte de dividir las ideas siguiendo sus articulaciones naturales, a la manera en que el buen carnicero separa y corta la res, evitando quebrantar y astillar las distintas partes que componen el organismo. Pero la filosofía no puede confundirse con las herramientas de las que dispone para separar y cortar (lógica, ciencias experimentales, prudencia política...) y que se guardan una vez utilizadas, porque la filosofía misma posee una singular morfología y, por tanto, sus propias articulaciones naturales, las cuales hay que saber distinguir (y a ello se invita desde estas páginas) para reconocerla en su ejercicio.
