Dia sis de gener, un grup armat d'ETA havia entrat a trets a la presó provincial de Navarra. Hi hagué ferits. L'escamot etarra volia alliberar un company detingut pocs dies abans. Dia divuit de gener del seixanta nou, uns agitadors estudiantils -en paraules de la premsa oficial- assaltaren el rectorat de la Universitat de Barcelona. Llançaren una escultura de Franco al carrer, estirparen la bandera monàrquica i en posaren una de roja amb la falç i el martell. D'ençà l'execució del policia Melitón Manzanas -torturador notori- el règim s'havia posat molt nerviós. Dia vint-i-cinc, les autoritats decretaren l'estat d'excepció.
