La obra recorre las carreras de los principales historiadores de la antigua Roma, comenzando con Salustio como el primer gran historiador seguido por la monumental Historia de Roma de Tito Livio, hasta llegar a la madurez documental de Tácito en sus obras Historias y Anales. También se incluye a César, aunque no se le considera estrictamente un historiador debido a sus famosos “Commentarii de bello Gallico” sobre la Guerra de las Galias y “De bello civile” sobre la guerra civil.
