La economía cubana del XVIII y XIX basó su crecimiento en su inserción en el mercado internacional. De ahí que gracias a las balanzas de comercio exterior se pueda estudiar su economía y su sociedad. A cambio de sus productos Cuba importó casi todo lo que necesitaba para el funcionamiento de su economía. Pero el comercio cubano no fue sólo el motor de su economía, sino la base de su sistema fiscal y uno de los nexos más fuertes entre la colonia y su metrópoli. La hacienda cubana pasó no sólo a ser autosuficiente sino a proporcionar recursos fiscales nada desdeñables a España y a financiar algunas de sus últimas aventuras coloniales.
