Cursó estudios de Filología Hispánica en la Universidad de Barcelona, donde se doctoró en 1977. Ha sido conferenciante y profesor en diversos centros y universidades de Europa y de América. Fundó y dirigió las revistas Literradura (Barcelona, 1976) y Syntaxis (Tenerife, 1983-1993), considerada «una de las expresiones más altas del pensamiento crítico en torno a la literatura y las artes plásticas» de la reciente historia cultural española. Fue director de la sede canaria de la Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo (UIMP).
