La historia no nos ofrece casi nada definitivamente cierto acerca de Omar. Se Cree que era el astrónomo de la corte durante el reinado de Malikshah, y se tiene el convencimiento de que llegó a escribir la mayor parte de las cuartetas que se le atribuyen; se conocen su obra sobre la álgebra, su comentario sobre Euclides, sus investigaciones en las intrincadas profundidades de las matemáticas y de la astronomía, y su creación de un nuevo calendario. Tenía su Casa de las Estrellas en Korasán.Al parecer Malikshah le estimaba grandemente mientras que, en cambio, Gazalí disputaba con él. Su sepultura está en Nisapur. Tuvo su comienzo de adolescencia en el año 1073 y murió algunos años antes de 1125.
