En 1904 la RAE premiaba este trabajo de F. Rodríguez Marín, ejemplo señero de los estudios literarios de nuestro positivismo, por el que cobraban carta de naturaleza en la historia de la literatura española el autor antequerano Pedro Espinosa y el resto de poetas de su círculo. Superada tan sólo en su faceta crítica, es obra de obligada referencia por el caudal de noticias de primera mano que ofrece, útiles no sólo al ámbito filológico. Queda recuperada esta rareza bibliográfica que se publicó definitivamente en 1907, y se completa con las «Adiciones» que su autor dio a luz dos años después.
