Dora del Hoyo nació en un pueblo de Castilla y León, en 1914. Tras efectuar los estudios elementales, muy joven comenzó a trabajar como empleada doméstica. En 1939 se trasladó a Madrid, donde alcanzó un merecido prestigio en su ámbito profesional. En 1946, pidió la admisión en el Opus Dei: fue la primera numeraria auxiliar en la Obra. Ese mismo año, se trasladó a Roma. Con su trabajo escondido y su recia abnegación, fue una ayuda inestimable para san Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer y para la expansión del Opus Dei por el mundo.
